A Visit to the Augustiner Bräu – Kloster Mülln Beer Garden in Salzburg, Austria

Here is a quick review on Augustiner Braustubl, a great place to visit while you are in Salzburg, Austria. The beer is really good, but visiting this historic beer restaurant in Austria is overall just a neat experience. You do not need to be a beer lover or of the legal age to enjoy the brewery and adjoining “braustubl” founded in 1621 by Augustinian monks. We visited with younger teens and they had some traditional food while we sipped on beer.

How to get to Augustiner Bräu

To get there from the old town, walk north along the river to the large yellow building. It is about a 20-minute walk from the Salzburg Cathedral.

How to get your mug of beer

Getting your beer is a unique sort of self-service experience — and a bit confusing. But that is part of the fun!

First, grab either a regular or large beer mug off of the shelves. Take it to the ticket window, order the beer you want (there were two), and pay for your beer. Then, wash it out in the large old double sink. Now, head to the beer counter. Give the guy at the tap your small receipt and place your mug on the counter with the handle towards him. He will take your receipt and pour your beer. Note: the mug is not a souvenir.

Explore the interior beer halls

There are also food stalls outside and upstairs. Even if you are not hungry you should explore the interior beer halls.

Hi Marcy! We are going to be in Austria in July and I’m very excited to check this out. I have a question about accomodation. We are renting an apartment in Hallstatt, but have an extra day before we fly home from Munich. We were thinking of driving up toward Salzburg and curious if you have any recommendation in the Salzburg area.

    Thanks!

Fun! We booked everything on the fly after our flight to Portugal was canceled. So, in Salzburg we stayed at All You Need Hotel for a couple of nights and it was true to its name, but the breakfast was really good! It looks like it is permanently closed now, but as a budget hotel I would not recommend it for your family. However, I mention it because it was in a little nook with other hotels that is walking distance to old town Salzburg. I highly recommend Fraulein Maria’s Bike Tour in Salzburg (even for your boys) and Mike’s Bike Tour in Munich.

Thanks, I will check out that area.

I saw your review of the bike tour, but is that “Sound of Music” specific? I think we were looking for something that has more history of Salzburg rather than just SOM.

I will definitely check out Mike’s bike tour since we will be flying in and out of Munich. Thanks!!
