Roatan, Honduras — More than Just a Cruise Stop

To most travelers, Roatán is best known as a cruise stop—a brief taste of Caribbean paradise before sailing to the next port. But to scuba divers, it’s a world-class underwater destination, home to vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life. Roatán’s above- and under-water adventures have etched unforgettable memories in my travel memoirs. Decades ago, Anthony’s Cay — a quiet scuba diving haven just outside the rustic West End village — was the backdrop to half of our amazing honeymoon (the other half was spent in Costa Rica!). It’s also where my mom spends three months every winter to rack up an impressive number of scuba dives.

This laid-back Caribbean island is also where I brought my oldest college-aged son for spring break in March of 2020. You can imagine how that went! We were the last plane in before ports shut down, and within days, everything came to a halt. A week later, American Airlines flew in empty planes to evacuate us and hundreds of folks eager to return home.

Now, as my mom continues her annual pilgrimage to Roatán, I’ve had the opportunity to visit again for a more “normal” experience. And let me tell you — there’s a lot to uncover on this tropical island.

Where to stay: West Bay or West End?

Contrary to what the names suggest, West Bay is actually at the western tip of the island, while West End is a small village about three miles down the coast.

If you’re looking for a beautiful beach with a bit more infrastructure, West Bay is your spot. It’s known for its picture-perfect shoreline, clear waters, and a handful of resorts, making it the ideal place to kick back and relax.

However, I personally preferred staying in West End. It has a more local and laid-back vibe, with a mix of accommodations, charming beachfront bars, and dive shops. Walking along the beach to West Bay was one of my highlights, but if you’d rather avoid the walk, you can always hop on a water taxi for a quick ride across the coast.

Whether you choose West Bay or West End, Roatán’s beauty will leave a lasting impression, and each area offers something special for every type of traveler.
