Get Out to Hong Kong’s Dragon’s Back Trail
Get a little nature on by adding the Dragon’s Back hike to your Hong Kong itinerary. If you love to hike, it is a no-brainer to embark on this trail just outside of the hustling and bustling city. It is a relatively easy half-day hike that you can get to on public transportation. You are rewarded with lovely scenic views of rolling green hills, turquoise blue water, and stretches of sandy beaches.
Get out and see another side of Hong Kong. What a welcome break from all of those skyscrapers!

Getting to the trail
The Dragon’s Back trail is easy to access with public transportation. We took an MTR to the Shau Kei Station. From here you will find double-decker Bus #9. Take this public bus about 15 minutes to the To Tei Wan bus stop.
We also took Bus #9 back to the city. The driver was quite speedy down the winding road shared with road bikers. Oh my!
The hike
This well-maintained trail rewards you with amazing birds-eye views. It is steep in the beginning but after that, it is just some gentle ups and downs. As you hike along the ridgeline you will quickly see how the “Dragon’s Back trail got its name.
OK, if you look closely at the photos we are wearing sandals. We were totally fine — but I do not recommend this. At. All.
Bring along water and snacks because there are no vendors or towns along the way. There are toilets at the beginning and end but not along the way. So, pack some tissue just in case. And, while I have seen ads for guided tours, I cannot see any reason to have a guide on this hike.
If we had more time we would have descended all the way to the beach. Nonetheless, it was awesome to get some exercise and fresh air while on vacation in Hong Kong.
