Colby College
Tucked away on a hill in Waterville, Maine I found Colby College to be a picture-perfect campus. I lucked out with a private tour by two current students who were such articulate and engaging young adults. I was surprised by the size of the campus, as it was larger than I expected for this size of school. And, while there isn’t that “campus town” feeling, the town of Waterville is a quick shuttle bus or drive away.
Some interesting points:
- Students are able to live in campus housing for all four years.
- As the number of students increases, Colby has invested in: a large new recreation center, a new performing arts center, the new Johnson Pond dorms.
- The art museum is free to students and the greater community.
- Colby College has invested in developing the town of Waterville and has an apartment-style housing option in the downtown.
- Colby has an exploratory term in January called the Jan Plan.
- Colby College awards financial aid, but not merit scholarships.

Getting to Colby College
The Portland (PWM), Maine airport is easy and convenient to fly into. Just make sure you aren’t booking a flight to Portland, Oregon! There are also airports in Bangor and Augusta, Maine. However, if you are touring other colleges you may also want to look at flights in and or out of Boston Logan Airport (BOS), Massachusetts or Manchester-Boston (MHT), New Hampshire.
Concord Coach Lines is a daily bus service to the Boston Airport and some other locations.
Visited and toured in September 2023.
